About The Galley

There is an effortless charm in the atmosphere that pervades The Galley, echoing the maritime heritage of its surroundings without growing tiresome. The humble interior, punctuated by weathered wooden accents, sets a tone that encourages diners to focus on the dishes rather than extravagance. While the staff tend to the floor with a steadiness that avoids intrusion, the ebb and flow of service isn’t without its quieter moments, lending a relaxed, if occasionally slow, rhythm to the experience.

Seafood dominates the landscape here, with the menu showcasing an impressive array of fresh catches that reflect the season’s bounty. Signature dishes balance simplicity and refinement, allowing the natural flavors to take center stage without unnecessary embellishments. Observations drawn from various The Galley photos shared online suggest consistent presentation—rustic yet thoughtfully composed. Although some may find portions modest, the quality rarely disappoints, and the occasional highlight, such as a perfectly seared scallop or a hearty fish stew, leaves a memorable impression that justifies the slightly elevated price point.

What emerges from reading The Galley reviews is a consensus around authenticity, albeit with moments of inconsistency. While the restaurant boasts a loyal local following appreciative of its straightforward approach, newcomers might find the experience leaning towards understated rather than spectacular. This subtle dichotomy extends to the ambiance as well—comfortably nautical but restrained enough to occasionally feel impersonal. Ultimately, the dining experience is a measured one: rewarding for those attuned to the rhythms of genuine seafood fare and the casual pace of a harbour-side eatery, but perhaps less so for those seeking polished finesse or brisk service.

A Galley Gem! Enjoyed a gorgeous meal here! Clever balance of interior rustic and modern with a log burner. Quality local, fresh seafood, beautifully cooked and presented! Top wine and loved the local gin, Rock Rose, served in it's own branded elegant glass.. Not forgetting the real, friendly, attentive, front of house service from Jo and her team, serving us up an 'Old Fashioned' not even on the menu, that's service quite rare these days! Made us feel very special, all adding to a very memorable return visit to Thurso, Caithness.Thank you again!

We visited here in August this year and were not disappointed. Food was beautiful, high quality and service was efficient and friendly, but not intrusive. Staff very kindly invited our dog in when they spotted me going out to the car to check on him, we had to politely decline as he is not well enough behaved, but was very thoughtful of them. Lovely, relaxed environment. We would make the journey from Inverness just for the food alone. We will be back next year!

The food was absolutely amazing, when we visited March 2025, they were doing a Pan Asian menu and every dish was made with with love, bursting with flavour and beautifully presented. Service was great, it was a little quieter during lunch but still a good atmosphere, intimate and friendly. Highly recommend.

Best sea trout, honestly, compliments to the chef. We had our lunch here doing the NC500, just passing Thurso. Beautiful food and service, much recommended!

Hidden gem. Interesting building and the interior to match the history. Food was fantastic, we had mussels and scallops for starter. They were beautifully presented. For main we had sea bass with scallops and chicken. It was gorgeous. Worth ordering the bread and garlic butter to mop up the sauce. We ordered the creme brulee for dessert which was creamy and crunchy, caramelised sugar. The staff gave lovely warm and friendly welcome. Thank you.

A fantastic place with a warm, homely atmosphere created by the staff. The food is created with passion using the highest quality local produce from the sea and the surrounding area. A world-class chef with experience from around the world. A place created with heart and charisma. If you're looking for more than just quality and flavor, this is the right place. It's worth every penny and planning a trip there.
